Thought for the day:- Fear underpins every aspect of Capitalist Society. Look at the adverts how many slowly prey on the fears of the masses? Fear of Aging, fear of loneliness, fear of poverty, fear of crime the list goes on, aside from those Cillit Bang adverts of course which rather instills murderous rage at that fictional demon Barry Scott.

As a followup to Evil's post a few days ago about Zombiewalk I bring you Fleshmob!!! Like a flashmob only with a bit more blood. Let the bands and political groups have their fun but we all know that shambling is where it's at!

Finally got round to watching some of the movies I've got cluttering up my DVD shelf as well which is all good.

The Decent:- Not a half bad movie in my opinion, first half is probably scarier than the second where the monsters turn up. Anyone with claustrophobia would do well to fast forward past the cave crawling scenes. Who'd have thought the scrap of helmet on rock surface could be more scare inducing than a sudden ice axe, throat interaction! The camera work for the scene should also be aplauded, really helps emphasis the cramped condition faced in caving. Very good effort all round!  (And the UK ending is better than the American one)

The Devils Rejects (special edition):- I already owned a copy of this but saw the special edtion on sale in HMV and thought I'd give it a watch. Secretly I was hoping that like the US edition it'd have an iron on "Captain Spaulding for President" T-shirt transfer alas it wasn't to be. The special features are intresting ad contain some fun deleted scenes. Most it could be argued were quite rightly deleted for pacing however a scene with Rosario Dawson and Dr Satan is intresting if out of keeping with the theme of the movie (hence its deletion). Plus there's a couple of adverts for Captain Spalding products and the Murder Ride never looked so tempting!

Devils Backbone:- Sister piece to the sublime (yes that right I said sublime!!) Pans Labyrinth and it's every bit as good. Don't want to spoil anything so I advise just watching it.

Spirit of the Beehive:- Now this was intresting, it links in with my praise of Pans Labyrinth. I sought it out after reading an interview with  Guillermo Del Toro which mentioned this film. It's again set during the Spanish Civil War and follows a young girl who see's the movie Frankenstein at a travelling picture show. After being told by her sister that the monster lives near by becomes devoted to finding it. She comes across a wounded rebel solder who she takes for the monster and takes it upon herself to feed and clothe him. Across this backdrop theres politcal imagery and metaphors but nothing too intrusive should the movie just be viewed just for entertainments sake.

Feast:-  I'll come out and admit it! I only bought this because it has Jason Mewes in it and I liked the idea of seeing him in a horror movie. This is by no means an awesome movie but watching it all I could think about was Tales From The Crypt, Tremors and every other low budget horror comedy. Gore, comedy deaths and paper thin characters abound!

And now back to work followed closely by home to save the earth from giant ants through the liberal use of guided missiles!

Easy world!
Fear not for this LJ will not be home to misery or  even idle discussion of anything rubbish in my life. If your looking for misery and recrimination then keep on browsing, don't worry theres someone going through something depressing on every other page here it seems!
Therefore this LJ will be a place of random thoughts, topical discussion, news and reviews which admittedly probably isn't as exciting as reading about someone finding out their boyfriend is actually sleeping with their parents and best friend but  hey ho what ya gonna do? If your answer is not read then I guess you win.....

As I'm at work currently and haven't seen todays headlines I'll use the old fall back and do a short review/recommendation a couple of comic series I've been reading recently starting with:

Welcome to Tranquility #1-#5:- After reading issue 5 which marks the beginning of the end for the first arc I have to say I'm really enjoying this series. Judging by the sales figures (gained from Marc Olivers helpful info for DC comics sales here ) it does indeed look like I'm one of the few however. The series revolves around a town filled with retired wartime superheroes and follows the investigation into the murder of one of their number. The use of "aged" comic pages that show the heroes in their prime are a novel idea and one that really helps keep the tone light and bouncy even against the darker elements contained within it.  I have to say that Issue 5 really caught me out, subtle things I hadn't noticed in previous issues suddenly become glaringly obvious and I'm really intrigued as to where issue 6 will take us.

Marvel Zombies Vs Army of Darkness #1-#2:-  Spinning off from the Mavel Zombies series in which everyones favourite heroes (maybe not everyones but you get the point) have become zombies and spend their time eating various other characters in the Marvel Universe (Magneto, Silver Surfer and Galactus being notable mentions) comes possibly the greatest cross over possible given the subject matter by introducing the chintastic Ash to the mix. While not 100% perfect the characterisation of Ash is extremely good and to watch him make his way through the world of spandex clad vigilantes is class. I'm also extremely impressed that the cause of the zombie outbreak is a the necronomicon causing superpowered deadites. It's only up to issue 2 at the moment but following a fateful encounter with a zombiefied Howard the Duck things are looking pretty grim for the boomstick wielding time traveller!

The Midnighter #1-#6:- Oh dear....... I'll say it now I was a massive fan of the Wildstorm Universe. Stormwatch, The Authority, Wildcats were amongst my favoutie series and I was genuinely looking forward to the reboot of the universe. I loved the set up and the fact that Captain Atom from regular DCU was used to bring it about (Captain Atom: Armageddon for those that missed it) however they have really dropped the ball alround. The Authority hasn't made it past issue 2, Wildcats is stalled at issue 1 and this solo series from Garth Ennis has really dissapointed me. In a 6 issue arc 5 issues dealt with the Midnighter being forced to go back in time to kill Hitler, meeting some ill defined time police in the process and eventually kicking someones head off and issue 6 was a stand alone story that relocated the Midnighter and Apollo to ancient Japan. Admittedly this is a brief description that misses some of the finer nuiances but in my opinion it's about all it deserves. By all means check it out just don't go in expecting too much, the characterisation is weak, the plot has huge holes in it and the aforementioned time police are poor existing only to facilitate the Midnighters time travel get out clause and provide a couple of cheap laughs along the way.

And thats that, I'll be more lucid and intresting with the next post honest!
